How did you get started designing custom speakers and subwoofers?

My obsession with sound started when I was just a kid. It started as a hobby because everything I found in the stores was not very exciting for the money. The store products just didn't move me. So I started building my own to get the kind of subsonic to ultrasonic range that makes me feel like the action is real and happening just feet in front of me.

How long have you been designing and building custom speakers?

I started designing and building my own custom speaker designs in 1985 primarily for my own use. It took many months to do all the research to create the kind of quality I wanted in a speaker. Then my friends and co-workers insisted that I make them some speakers and it went from there. That was over 15 years ago. In the process, I studied mathematics, physics and electronics to apply the subtleties of good speaker design. But my greatest education has come through my own research and development in my shop. I studied modifications of current designs which always led to further refinements. Experience has been my best teacher.

Why do you insist on doing everything yourself, from designing and tooling the cabinets to assembly and shipping?

I have never found a cabinet maker, for instance, that will put in the thought and effort to manufacture cabinets to the quality specifications I want for myself and my customers. I have taken bids from several companies that make the cabinets for major brands, but they just refuse the business. They say they can't afford to take that much time and put that much attention into the details. So I still do everything myself, from the design of the box to the mathematics needed to calculate the dimensions and crossover points. I much prefer seeing every step of the process so I can trust that everything is done well. I can't put my name on anything that isn't right.
